Block paving is the classic premium driveway surface. Laid by hand, one block at a time, on a properly compacted sub-base with a concrete edge restraint and kiln-dried sand joints. A good block paved driveway adds visible kerb appeal, lasts 25-30 years with basic maintenance, and — unlike poured surfaces — if a section damages, you lift and replace individual blocks rather than redo the whole area.

Types of Block Paving We Install

Concrete block paving
(Standard driveway spec). The workhorse block. Tobermore, Marshalls, Brett — all major UK manufacturers. 50mm or 60mm thick for driveways, available in standard rectangles or shaped (S-blocks, fan-pattern). The default choice for 80% of residential driveways in Retford and Doncaster.
Clay pavers
A harder, denser block with deeper colour. More expensive than concrete but holds colour for decades and develops character with age. Common on conservation-area driveways and properties where the owner wants a specific aesthetic.
Permeable block paving
(SuDS-compliant). Blocks laid with wider joints and a permeable sub-base that lets water drain through rather than run off. Required for certain new-build driveways and useful where planning permission is needed for a front driveway over the threshold area.
Commercial block paving
80mm blocks rated for heavier traffic. Used on forecourts, trade yards and pedestrian areas of car parks. Same hand-lay principle, stronger blocks, deeper sub-base.

Concrete edge restraints
Every block paved driveway needs edge restraint. We concrete in haunched edges around the perimeter so blocks can't migrate outward over time.
Block laying and cuts
Blocks laid by hand in the chosen pattern (herringbone, stretcher, basket-weave). All cuts made clean with a block splitter or diamond saw. Full-block integrity maintained at edges.
Kiln-dried sand and compaction
Joints filled with kiln-dried sand, vibrated in with a compactor plate, and topped up until joints are full. We walk you through the finished driveway and leave you our direct number.

Standard concrete block on a straightforward driveway lands in one range; clay pavers, permeable systems or detailed patterns land higher. The sub-base work (which the customer doesn't see) usually accounts for 30-40% of the job cost.
